A Brief Look Back.
From the late 1800’s to the years after World War I, Boyne City was the lumber capital of northwest Michigan, and Lake Charlevoix was the hub of its waterborne commerce. Over the years, sail barges, steamers, and tugs transported millions of board feet of lumber down Lake Charlevoix—called Pine Lake until it was renamed in 1926—to Charlevoix and ports beyond. But by the 1920’s, the timber supply was exhausted, the lumberjacks moved on, and most of the thirteen saloons closed their doors. The pilings at the foot of Water Street are virtually all that remain of the era.
